The Governing Body is the Admissions Authority for Benedict Biscop CE [Aided] Primary School. The Governing Body manage the application process and all applications should be made to the school.
Parents have the right to express a preference for a school of their choice. In the first instance, all preferences expressed will be considered on an equal weighting basis, but where a child is eligible for more than one place it will be the highest ranked school for which they are eligible that they will be offered.
The Governors will admit pupils whose statement of Special Educational Need indicates the school, as the correct placement for the child named in the statement.
The Admission Policy is applied if the number of applications exceeds the number of places available.
At Benedict Biscop CE [Aided] Primary School the standard number for the school is 30. The Governing Body, as the Admissions Authority, will admit pupils to the school up to that number, in accordance with the following criteria in the following order of priority.
1. LOOKED AFTER CHILDREN - the Governors will admit pupils deemed to be in the care of the local authority [looked after children]. Looked After Children will be considered within the meaning of section 22 of the Children Act 1989, at the time of their application and who will be so looked after at the time when they are admitted to the school.
2. CHURCH PLACES
Up to 6 children will be admitted according to the following criteria in this order of priority:
[a] (i) Children of practising Anglicans at the heart of the Church of at least 2 years standing, resident and worshipping within the Deanery of Wearmouth, Sunderland.
(ii) Children of practising Anglican Christians attached to the Church of at least 2 years standing, resident and worshipping within the Deanery of Wearmouth, Sunderland.
(iii) Children of Anglicans known to their Church of at least 2 years standing, resident and worshipping within the Deanery of Wearmouth, Sunderland.
[b] Children of practising non-Anglican Christians, at the heart of their Church,which is affiliated to "Churches together in England and Wales" of at least 2 years standing, resident and worshipping within the Deanery of Wearmouth, Sunderland.
[c] Children of practising members of other Faith Communities at the heart of their faith of at least 2 years standing, resident and worshipping within the Deanery ofWearmouth, Sunderland.
Christian applicants should be able to give evidence that the child for whom the place is sought has been baptised or had a Service of Thanksgiving. [School will apply for this at a later date].
After consideration of applications in category 2a and the total number exceeds 6, then proximity of the school to the child’s home address will be used as the " tie breaker ", as set out in category 5.

3. SIBLINGS
Children will be admitted if they have a sibling in the school at the time they join.
4. EXCEPTIONAL MEDICAL AND COMPASSIONATE REASONS
The Governors will admit such children as they judge to have appropriate exceptional medical or compassionate reasons for admission and who will continue to meet this criteria at the time of admission to the school. Medical certificate or other appropriate evidence from key professionals involved with the child will be required at the time of the application.
5. NEIGHBOURHOOD PLACES
Children will be admitted based on proximity to the school of the child’s home address, where they are resident at the
end of the preference period, measured by the shortest, safest, walking distance to a school entrance along a lighted
footpath [up to three miles] or the shortest appropriate travelling distance [over three miles] shall be the further
selecting criterion within that category, based on information supplied by Sunderland LA using the Geographical
Information System [GIS].
The number of places offered under this category based on the distance to the school varies
year to year. No assumptions can be made.
6. SURPLUS PLACES
It is expected that there will be no surplus places.
NOTES
(i) "Practising" means that at least one parent/carer/guardian or the child, is a regular attendee at a relevant church [or non
Christian congregation] for at least 2 years and that the Parish Priest ChurchWarden [or appropriate minister or their
deputy] is able to supply a reference certifying the extent and duration of the attendance.
(ii) The definition of the "tiers" in category 2[a] are: an applicant "at the heart of the church" will be a regular worshipper.
This will be one who worships usually twice a month.
To accommodate difficult patterns of work and family relationships
account will be taken of week-day worship.The worshipper can be the child for whom the application is made or one
or both the parents.
(iii) An applicant "attached to the church" will be a regular but not frequent worshipper, by which it is meant [for example]
one who usually attends a monthly family or church parade service or is regularly involved in a weekday church activity
including an element of worship.
(iv) An applicant "known to the church" will not be a frequent but probably an occasional worshipper, someone who is perhaps known through a family connection, or one or more of whose family would be involved in some church activity, such as a uniformed or other church organisation.
(v) Parent is deemed to mean any person with parental responsibility with whom the child resides for the majority of the week.
(vi) Sibling is deemed to mean an older brother/sister, or older child,who shares the same parent/carer and lives at the same address, who will still be attending Benedict Biscop CE [Aided] Primary School at the time of admission.
(vii) The Governing Body will insist on sufficient written evidence from appropriate professionals to support each and every application made for places in category 1, 2 and 4.
(viii) The Governing Body will insist on sufficient written evidence
to support residency for each and every application.
(ix) Applications which are unsuccessful in one category may be considered in the following category if applicable.
(x) Where an application is found to contain false information the Governing Body reserve the right to withdraw their offer of a place.
(xi) Parents/carers/guardians seeking a place for their child at Benedict Biscop CE [Aided] Primary School must complete and submit the application form - available from the school.
(xii) Parents who are not successful in securing a place for their children at our Nursery School have no statutory right of appeal.
The school accepts no responsibility for forms which arrive after the date specified, these may not be considered until after the applications which were received by the specified date as identified by the Local Authority.

[xi] Parents/carers/guardians seeking a place for their child at Benedict Biscop CE [Aided] Primary School must complete and
submit the common admission form to the City of Sunderland LA by the time given in the LA admission procedure,
published annually in an appendix to the School prospectus.
[xii] Parents who are not successful in securing a place for
their children at our school have a statutory right of appeal.

of Governors at the school address. The school accepts no responsibility
for forms which arrive after the date specified, these may not be considered
until after the applications which were received by the specified date
as identified by the Local Authority. Any parent whose application for
their child is unsuccessful in reception may apply to the school to
be placed on a waiting list. Parents may request forms from the School
Administrator.
Children are allocated places from the waiting list according
to the oversubscribed admissions criteria at the time of the vacancy.
Parents who are offered a place for their child in the reception class
must ensure that their child begins their education no later than the
beginning of the Summer term in the academic year of the child's 5th
birthday.Any child not doing so will have to be considered for a place
during the following year, ie places are not transferable year to year.
